Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was a growing rail and meatpacking center, with its population approaching 250,000 by the 1910 census. Its fortunes rested on the stockyards, freight lines, and grain and livestock trade that moved through the city's rail yards along the Missouri River bluffs. Wealthy families who had prospered in these industries were moving south, away from the crowded downtown, and country clubs with golf courses and lawns became a visible sign of that move. Developers were beginning to lay out the wider suburban acreage on the city's southern edge, and the club grounds in this view would have stood for leisure, status, and a new kind of residential life. Residents of the time would have known the city first for commerce and trade, with its country clubs marking the changing habits of its prosperous families.
