In 1909 Kansas City, Missouri, was a fast-growing river city whose fortunes rested on cattle, grain, and rail. Its neighbor across the state line, the Kansas City stockyards at Armourdale, drew meatpackers such as Armour and Company, and the packing trade shaped jobs, freight traffic, and the city's reputation as a livestock market across the Plains. The panorama's title, Armour-Holmes, points to that packing and commercial world, which the people living here would have recognized as the source of much of their daily work. Kansas City was also expanding its streetcar lines, its boulevards, and its public parks, and its civic leaders were pressing for better river crossings and wholesale districts. Within a few years the city would count a quarter of a million residents, and this view captures the industrial ambition behind that growth.
