In 1909 Kansas City, Missouri, was a fast-growing railroad and grain hub with a population of roughly a quarter million, and its leading families were spending heavily on the boulevards and parks that landscape architect George Kessler had begun laying out in the 1890s. The Paseo, a broad, tree-lined parkway running south from the city's downtown toward the new residential districts, was one of the most visible results, and it signaled that the city wanted to be seen as more than a rail and commerce town. Streetcar lines carried clerks, shopkeepers and their families out along such routes, making the Paseo a place for Sunday strolls, carriage rides and the new automobiles that were just beginning to appear on city streets. Residents of the era would have known the city as a commercial crossroads on the Missouri River, with its growing business district and its ambitious park system competing for attention.
