Linwood Paseo in Kansas City, Missouri, was a residential boulevard on the city's growing southeast side in 1909, when Kansas City had grown to roughly a quarter million people. The city's wealth rested on its role as a rail and livestock hub, with meatpacking in the West Bottoms and freight yards that drew workers from across the region. The boulevard and parkway system laid out by landscape designer George Kessler gave the city wide tree-lined avenues, and streetcar lines carried families from these new neighborhoods to downtown offices, shops, and factories. Residents of the area knew it as a respectable address where the city's commercial growth gave way to lawns, houses, and churches. The photograph captures that transition from urban bustle to a planned suburban streetscape at the height of Kansas City's boom years.
