Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was a river city that had grown into one of the country's major rail and livestock centers, where the Missouri and Kansas rivers met and several trunk lines converged. Its packing houses and grain elevators, along with the stockyards just across the state line in Kansas City, Kansas, handled cattle, hogs and wheat bound for eastern and western markets. The population had climbed past a quarter million around 1910, and new streetcar lines and office blocks pushed the built-up area over the surrounding hills and bottomland. This view, taken from the Kersey Coates area, shows the commercial skyline that residents of the period knew as the heart of a fast-growing regional market.
