In 1909 Westport and Hyde Park were neighborhoods on the older edge of Kansas City, Missouri, a city of roughly a quarter million people that had grown up as a rail and livestock center. Westport began as a frontier trading settlement on the routes west to Santa Fe and Oregon, and by the early twentieth century it had been absorbed into the city, with its old commercial core giving way to shops, churches, and modest homes. Hyde Park, to the north, was laid out as a residential district that drew families who wanted quieter streets within reach of downtown by streetcar. Residents of the time knew the area as a place where the city's past and its expanding middle class lived side by side.
