In 1909 Kansas City, Missouri, was one of the great rail and livestock centers of the country, where the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and other lines met the stockyards and packing houses that fed much of the nation. The city had grown quickly since the 1880s and counted roughly a quarter of a million people by the 1910 census. Its streets were lined with new brick houses, and the political life of the city was dominated by the Democratic machine led by Joe Shannon, while reformers pressed for cleaner government. The Evanston Club photographed here was one of the neighborhood and social organizations that gave middle-class residents a place to meet, though the club's specific history is not well recorded in the sources I can confirm. The Missouri River flood of 1903 was still within living memory for many residents, reminding them how much the city depended on its riverfront and levees.
