Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was a rail and livestock center on the Missouri River, with a population of roughly a quarter million and a downtown built around wholesale houses, banks, and hotels. Its economy leaned on the rail lines that converged there and on the meatpacking and grain trade that moved through the stockyards across the river in Kansas City, Kansas. Downtown streets such as Baltimore Avenue, which runs through the city's commercial core, carried streetcar traffic, shoppers, and delivery wagons, and the city was expanding its electric streetcar network to reach new residential districts. Local life in these years centered on churches, fraternal lodges, and the city's growing number of department stores and theaters. Residents of the period would have known the city first as a crossroads of commerce, a place where goods, cattle, and travelers met and changed hands every day.
