Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1909 was a shoe manufacturing city on the North Shore, where factory work and the harbor supported local families while Boston money built summer houses along the coast. The Taft summer house belonged to that seasonal world, when wealthy families from Boston and beyond spent July and August by the water, reached by the railroad lines that ran north from the city. Life in the district centered on sailing, tennis, and dinners on wide lawns, a rhythm that set it apart from the mill and factory neighborhoods inland. Residents of Beverly in these years would have known the town both for its shoe industry and for the summer colony that filled its shore each season.
