Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1909 was known as the Paper City, a mill town built on the Connecticut River where water from the Holyoke Dam and its network of canals turned the wheels of paper and textile works. The Parsons Paper Company, shown here along the river, was one of many paper concerns that drew workers from Ireland, French Canada, and Eastern Europe, and the city's population had grown quickly over the previous decades. Rail lines carried its finished paper to markets across New England and beyond. Residents of the day would have recognized the place by its mill chimneys and the steady work of its canal district.
