Beverly, Massachusetts, on the North Shore of Essex County, was a city of shoe factories and summer estates in 1909. Its shoe trade was centered on the manufacturing works near the harbor, and the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, formed in 1899, had its headquarters in the city. At the same time, Boston families had been building seaside houses in Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing since the 1870s, so the shore road was lined with large private places and gardens. This photograph shows one of those summer homes, a reminder that the same town was home to both factory workers and the wealthy households who spent their warm months by the ocean.
