Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1911 was a North Shore manufacturing town whose economy rested heavily on the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, the Boston-based firm formed in 1899 by merging several shoe machinery makers. Its Beverly works built the lasting, cutting, and sewing machines that shoe factories across New England and beyond depended on, so the plant employed a large share of local workers and shaped the town's daily rhythms. Residents also knew Beverly as a commuter and summer community with rail links south to Boston, and its waterfront on Beverly Harbor tied it to the older maritime trade of Essex County. This panoramic view records the factory complex as the company's presence on the shoreline, at a moment when shoe machinery stood at the center of the region's industrial life.
