Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1911 was a residential town of roughly 27,000 people on the southwest edge of Boston, known mostly for its large estates and its commuters. Wealthy Boston families had been building houses and gardens there for decades, and the Olmsted landscape firm, which kept its office in town, helped shape many of those grounds. Electric streetcar lines carried residents to Boston and neighboring towns, so businessmen could work downtown and return to leafy surroundings in the evening. Brookline governed itself through an open town meeting rather than a city council, a practice residents took pride in. A private garden like the Anderson property shown here would have been seen by neighbors as part of that carefully planned, prosperous suburban world.
