Dummer Academy in Byfield, a village in the town of Newbury on Massachusetts's North Shore, was already a long-established school in 1911, having opened in 1763 through a bequest from the Dummer family. Newbury itself was mostly farmland and small village centers, while the region's larger industries, including shoe factories and textile mills, were concentrated a few miles south in Newburyport. Many of the academy's students were boys from families across New England who boarded on campus, so the school's schedule of classes, chapel and athletics shaped daily life in the village. Residents would have known Byfield first as the home of the academy and as a quiet rural neighborhood set among fields and orchards near the coast.
