Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1909 was a mill city on the Connecticut River, where canals fed by the Holyoke dam supplied water power to factories along the riverbank. Paper was the town's best-known product, earning it the nickname "Paper City," but textile and thread manufacturing also drew large numbers of workers, many of them immigrants from Ireland, Quebec, and southern and eastern Europe. The American Thread Company, formed in 1898 by combining several thread makers, operated major plants in Holyoke, and this view shows the kind of multistory brick works that anchored the local economy and set the rhythm of the city's shifts and streetcar traffic. Residents of the day would have known Holyoke chiefly for its mills, its canals, and the employment they provided.
