Woronoco, a mill village in the town of Westfield in Hampden County, Massachusetts, looked much as it does in this 1912 panoramic photograph. Its economy rested on the Strathmore Paper Company, whose mill on the Westfield River made fine writing and drawing papers that sold well beyond New England. Westfield itself was a manufacturing town with a diversified base of factories, and the railroads that ran up the Westfield valley carried raw materials in and finished goods out. For the families who worked the mill and lived in the houses clustered around it, Woronoco was known first as a paper-making village, where the rhythm of the day was set by the factory whistle.
