Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1912 was a harbor town on the North Shore that had built its name on the sea. For more than two centuries its fishing fleet had sent cod and mackerel to market, but by the early twentieth century the fishing trade was shrinking, and the town was turning more toward summer visitors and yachting off Marblehead Neck. Shoemaking, once common in the region, had largely moved to nearby Lynn, which left Marblehead's economy more dependent on seasonal residents and small harbor businesses. The town's civic center was Abbot Hall, a clock-towered town building from the 1870s, and the tower and harbor views drew residents and visitors who saw the old seaport and the newer resort life existing side by side.
