Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1903 was a city of roughly 100,000 people, shaped by Harvard and by the factories along its rail lines and river edges. Massachusetts Avenue carried the main traffic between Boston and Harvard Square, and electric streetcars shared its paving with wagons, delivery carts, and pedestrians. Many residents worked in manufacturing, while the college drew students, professors, and a steady trade in books, boarding houses, and shops. The avenue was also a daily route for people moving between the city's neighborhoods and the commercial squares, where the new century's paved streets and trolleys were changing how far people could travel for work and errands.
