Mansfield, Massachusetts, in 1903 was a small industrial town in Bristol County, about midway between Boston and Providence along the main rail line that linked those cities. Its economy rested on shoe manufacturing and a mix of smaller shops, many of them owned by local families who also ran the town's churches, banks, and civic boards. The railroad made it easy to ship goods and to commute to Boston, which brought a steady flow of workers and new residents into the village. This panorama, labeled "Lowneys," shows the town as residents of the period would have recognized it, with its factories, streets, and rail connections set against the surrounding fields and houses.
