Lasell Seminary in 1903 stood in Auburndale, a village within the city of Newton, about ten miles west of Boston. The school had been founded in the 1850s as a girls' academy, and by the turn of the century it offered young women a practical education that combined academic study with training in homemaking, household management, and the arts. Auburndale's commuter railroad service on the Boston and Albany line made it a desirable place for Boston professionals to live, and Newton's streetcars and new houses reflected the growth of the suburbs in these years. Families in the region knew the seminary as one of the best-known schools for women in New England, and its grounds were a visible part of the village's character.
