Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1898 was still a working harbor town on the North Shore, though its old cod-fishing trade had shrunk well below its eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century peak. Fishermen, sailmakers, and boatbuilders worked the waterfront, while many residents had turned to shops, small trades, and service work. The town's summer colony was growing on Marblehead Neck, bringing well-to-do visitors from Boston and elsewhere who arrived by rail and boat and filled the hotels and cottages each season. The nation's war with Spain that year drew local young men into service and kept the town's news focused on the fleet and the harbor, which residents had long known as the center of their lives.
