Lynnfield, a small farming town in Essex County north of Lynn, Massachusetts, was in 1918 a community whose young men were being called into the country's war effort during the last year of the First World War. Lynn, the nearby city, was then one of the largest shoe-manufacturing centers in the United States, and many families in the surrounding towns depended on its factories and the wages they paid. This panoramic photograph shows members of the 8th Regiment posed in the open, a record of a unit drawn from local men at a moment when the war dominated daily life. Later that fall, the influenza pandemic and the Armistice of November 11 would reshape civic routines across Massachusetts, and the men in this picture would have known the year as one of military service, uncertainty, and waiting for news from France.
