Camp Devens, in Ayer, Massachusetts, was a sprawling Army training ground in 1918, named for Charles Devens, a Civil War general who later served as United States Attorney General. Its National Army units, including the 76th Division drawn largely from New England draftees, drilled on fields that had been open farmland just a few years before. Ayer and neighboring Shirley grew used to the constant noise of rifle ranges and marching columns, and local merchants sold goods to a population that far outran the towns' old limits. The rows of wooden barracks in this view show how quickly the cantonment's grid was laid out across the hills. Most families in the region knew the post simply as Devens, the place where their young men learned soldiering before going overseas.
