Camp Devens, on the edge of Ayer in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, was still filling with National Army recruits in 1918, and the photograph captures it in the middle of that busy year. In the fall, influenza swept through the crowded barracks and drill companies, and the camp became one of the hardest-hit military posts in the country. Hospital wards overflowed, and funerals were held quickly as the death toll rose through September and October. The Armistice in November ended the fighting in Europe, but the sickness still lingered in the camp for weeks. Nearby towns such as Ayer and Shirley were drawn into the crisis, as local doctors, nurses, and volunteers worked alongside Army medical staff.
