Camp Devens in 1918 was the Army's training ground for draftees from across Massachusetts, many of them mill hands, clerks, and farm laborers who had seldom left their home counties. Local draft boards in cities such as Lowell, Worcester, and Boston assigned men to the post, and they reached Ayer by rail with little more than a suitcase and a notice to report. Inside the cantonment they learned close-order drill, bayonet work, and the use of gas masks, under instructors who had served in the regular Army or the National Guard. For the Commonwealth's industrial towns, the camp was the first stop on the road to France, and it meant losing workers and sons to the uniform.
