Camp Devens, located near Ayer in north central Massachusetts, was established in 1917 as one of the large training cantonments the United States built after entering the First World War that April. The War Department chose the site for its rail connections and open land, and the camp grew rapidly into a city of wooden barracks, drill fields, and mess halls housing tens of thousands of draftees and volunteers. Ayer itself was a small railroad town where the Boston and Maine line and the Fitchburg line met, so the arrival of troop trains transformed its streets and shops almost overnight. Local residents would have known the camp as a source of wartime jobs, boarding demand, and anxious families watching for news of sons shipping out to France.
