Magnolia, a village on the eastern shore of Gloucester on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, was in 1907 best known as a summer resort, drawing Boston families to its cottages, hotels, and rocky coastline facing the open bay. The wider town of Gloucester still lived by the sea, with its fishing schooners sailing for the Grand Banks and its wharves busy with the handling of fish. Granite quarries across Cape Ann supplied stone for buildings and monuments, and the railroad carried both freight and summer visitors into the region. Gloucester's population mixed old New England families with newer immigrants from Portugal and Italy, and the leisurely calm of the summer colony sat close to a working harbor.
