Newark in 1912 was the largest city in New Jersey, with a population of roughly 350,000 at the 1910 census, and its economy still rested on leather, jewelry, hats, and beer. Tanneries and factories lined the Passaic River and the rail corridors, while breweries on the city's west side shipped to customers across the region. Electric streetcars had by then reached most of the city's neighborhoods, so a clerk or machinist could live in a crowded ward and still ride downtown in minutes. Politics that year pulled attention beyond the city limits, since New Jersey's governor, Woodrow Wilson, was preparing his run for the presidency. The panorama shows a city where dense blocks of commercial buildings, factory chimneys, and church spires still crowded close together, as they had for decades.
