Biwabik, in St. Louis County on Minnesota's Mesabi Range, was a young iron mining town in 1902, built around open pits that had only recently been opened to steam shovels. The Mesabi ore body had been developed in the 1890s, and the Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railway hauled the ore north to Lake Superior ports, where ore boats carried it east to the steel mills. In 1901 the newly formed United States Steel Corporation, which bought heavily from Mesabi mines, pulled the range further into national industry. The workforce was a mix of Finnish, Italian, Slovenian, Croatian, and Cornish miners, and the company town's life revolved around shift whistles, boarding houses, and the seasonal rhythm of the ore docks.
