In June 1919, a tornado tore through Fergus Falls, the county seat of Otter Tail County in west central Minnesota, killing dozens of residents and leaving much of the town in ruins. Fergus Falls was a railroad and farm-trade town set along the Otter Tail River, and its economy rested on grain, dairy, and the local businesses that served the surrounding countryside. The storm struck on June 22, and in the weeks that followed neighbors, relief workers, and city crews cleared debris and began rebuilding homes, churches, and storefronts. For those who lived through it, the date became the town's reference point for the worst disaster in its memory, and the photograph records the damage as it stood in the months after the storm.
