Fergus Falls, the county seat of Otter Tail County in west-central Minnesota, was a farm trade and milling town in 1919, built around the falls of the Otter Tail River and the railroad lines that carried grain, lumber, and livestock out of the region. On June 22, 1919, a tornado tore through the city, and the panoramic photograph records the wreckage of the damaged neighborhoods in the aftermath. Residents who lived through it would have remembered the day as the storm that broke their streets and homes in a single afternoon. Clearing debris and rebuilding took months of local labor and cooperation, and the event remained a reference point in the community's memory for years afterward.
