Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1921 sat on the Red River opposite Fargo, North Dakota, and its fortunes rested on agriculture and rail. The town was a shipping and trading point for the surrounding wheat and sugar beet country of the Red River Valley, and the Northern Pacific and Great Northern lines ran through it, moving grain and goods east and west. Moorhead was also the seat of Clay County and home to the State Normal School, which had been training teachers there since 1885 and gave the town a strong civic and educational identity. Residents of the early 1920s lived through the postwar farm slump that hit valley growers hard, and they knew Moorhead as a quiet college and railroad town tied closely to its larger neighbor across the river.
