In 1918 Minnesota was deep in the First World War, and a motor corps company like this one shows how civilian volunteers who could drive and repair vehicles were pulled into the war effort at home. Trucks and automobiles were needed to haul supplies, move materiel and support defense work, and the state council of defense promoted such service alongside Liberty Loan drives and food conservation. The state's economy rested on wheat, dairy, lumber and iron ore, with Minneapolis milling flour and Duluth shipping Mesabi Range ore from its harbor. By autumn the influenza pandemic had reached Minnesota, and many communities closed schools and banned public gatherings, which ended the wartime parades and drills that had filled the months before.
