Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1912 was a Northern Pacific railroad town on the Red River, directly across from Fargo, North Dakota. Its state normal school, which opened in 1888 to train teachers for the region's schools, was the town's leading institution and the centerpiece of this view. The surrounding Red River Valley was given over largely to wheat, which moved east by rail, so farm prices and the railyards set the rhythm of daily life. Most students were young people preparing to teach, and many would go on to classrooms across the valley and the northern plains. The school's growth mirrored the settlement boom that had filled the prairie counties over the previous two decades.
