Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, was a young Lutheran school in 1912, serving the Norwegian-American families who had settled the Red River Valley. Moorhead had grown up around the Northern Pacific Railway, which named the town for one of its directors, and its economy rested on the grain trade that moved east by rail from prairie farms. Across the river, Fargo, North Dakota, shared many of the same businesses and markets. Concordia had been founded in the early 1890s to train young people for church work and teaching, so its campus reflected both the faith and the immigrant culture of its students. Valley residents knew it as a place that kept the region's Scandinavian heritage alive alongside American schooling.
