Two Harbors, Minnesota, sat on the North Shore of Lake Superior in 1917, where the town's economy rested on iron ore moving from the Mesabi Range to the lake. Ore docks and rail yards dominated the waterfront, and the harbor's shipping season set the rhythm of work and wages for the families who lived there. That year the United States entered the First World War, and demand for iron and steel kept the docks busy, with ore boats loading steadily through the open-water months. Residents of the town would have known it first as a port, a place where railroad cars rolled down to the water and ships carried the region's iron south and east.
