The Minnesota State Fair in 1909 was held on its grounds in Saint Paul, where the state had gathered its farm exhibitions since the 1880s. Agriculture still drove the state's economy that year. Farmers were shifting from wheat toward dairy cattle, hogs, and mixed crops, and the fair showed off livestock, machinery, and produce to rural families who traveled to the city by train and interurban line. Saint Paul was then a growing river city, and the fair drew crowds from across the state and from the Twin Cities. For many visitors, it was the yearly reminder of the farm life that supplied the cities' mills, stockyards, and railroads.
