In 1916, Louisville was a river city on the Ohio, a rail and tobacco center, and home to many distilleries, and its state fair drew farm families from across Kentucky to its grounds. Agriculture was central to the state's economy, so the fair meant livestock judging, exhibits of grain, produce and tobacco, and the sight of prize horses that Kentucky breeders took great pride in. Horse racing and harness shows drew big crowds, and the fair was a rare chance for rural and city residents to mix in one place. The year also fell during the war in Europe, which was then a distant event for most Louisvillians, though it shaped talk about prices, trade and the future of American farm goods.
