Springfield, the Illinois state capital, hosted the state fair on its fairgrounds in 1909, a setting the state had used since the fair moved there from Chicago in the 1890s. The city was a growing county seat that lived on state government, banking and insurance, the coal mines of the surrounding countryside, and the farm trade moving through its rail yards and stockyards. Steam railroads and electric interurban lines carried farm families and city visitors to the grounds for a week of exhibits, livestock judging and races. Residents also knew Springfield as Abraham Lincoln's home town, and the fair crowds passed landmarks tied to him on their way to the grandstands and exhibit halls.
