The Illinois State Fair Grounds at Springfield in 1906 occupied land on the city's east side, where the state fair had been held since 1894 on grounds the state had acquired for the purpose. The fair drew farmers, livestock breeders, and manufacturers from across Illinois, and the exhibition halls and grandstands shown here were the center of an event Springfield residents regarded as their own annual celebration. The city was then the state capital, with the Statehouse completed in 1888 dominating downtown, and it carried the weight of Abraham Lincoln, who had practiced law there and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Railroads and electric interurban lines brought visitors in from surrounding counties, making the fair a major social occasion for the region in the years before automobiles were common.
