Grant Park, on Chicago's lakefront, was still a young public space in 1906, built largely on land filled in from Lake Michigan and renamed for Ulysses S. Grant only a few years earlier. Chicago was then one of the country's great rail and freight centers, and its stockyards, grain elevators, and factories drew workers from across Europe and the rural Midwest. The park's edge was still crossed by Illinois Central tracks, a reminder that the railroad and the city's commercial life pressed hard against the public lakefront. Residents who walked its paths along Michigan Avenue would have known it as a place of open air and lake breezes in a city whose growth was measured in new buildings, new neighborhoods, and rising population every year.
