In 1907, International Harvester was only five years old, formed in 1902 when the McCormick and Deering companies and several smaller makers merged into one firm headquartered in Chicago. Its plants on the city's West Side turned out reapers, binders, mowers and wagons for farms across the Midwest and abroad, making the company one of the largest employers in a city that led the nation in farm machinery. Chicago was growing quickly, passing 2 million residents by 1910, and its stockyards, railroad yards and factories drew immigrants from Europe to work along the river. Local readers would have known the Harvester works as a source of steady jobs and a symbol of the city's industrial reach, even as the McCormick family's wealth made the company a visible force in civic life.
