Chicago in 1907 was the rail and grain hub of the American interior, with stockyards, meatpacking, steel mills at the city's edges, and a grain trade that moved through its elevators and along the lakefront. The population had passed 2 million by that decade, and the Loop was filling with office towers as the city rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1871 and expanded its water and sewer systems. The Majestic Building, a downtown office block, offered a high vantage over the central business district, where streetcars, elevated trains, and horse-drawn wagons shared crowded streets. Residents of the time knew the city as a place of ambition and noise, a metropolis that had turned its industrial growth into a national reputation.
