The McCormick works on Chicago's West Side, along the South Branch of the Chicago River, were a major industrial site in 1907. Cyrus McCormick's reaper company had merged into the International Harvester Company in 1902, and the Chicago plants were turning out mowers, binders, and other farm machinery for buyers across the Midwest and beyond. Chicago had passed 1.7 million residents at the 1900 census, and its rail lines, river branches, and stockyards supported a large manufacturing workforce, many of whom lived in nearby immigrant neighborhoods. The yard in this view shows how the factory's freight and whistles shaped daily life on the river's west bank.
