In 1907 the University of Chicago was still a young institution, and the death of its founding president, William Rainey Harper, in January 1906 had left it looking for steady direction. Its campus was a cluster of stone buildings on the South Side, and the school was known in the city for admitting men and women on equal terms and for running its year on a quarter system rather than the traditional academic calendar. Students and faculty came from across Chicago and from distant states, and many of them rode the South Side elevated lines to reach classes. Across the city, the stockyards and railyards still set the rhythm of daily work, so a campus of scholars sat beside one of the country's great industrial centers.
