Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, was about 56 years old in 1907, having been founded in 1851 by Methodist leaders on a lakeshore site just north of Chicago. The campus at that time centered on Old Main, the large stone building that housed much of the school, with open lawns running toward Lake Michigan. Evanston was a residential suburb whose economy depended on the university, churches, and commuter rail service to Chicago, and the town's civic life was shaped by its Methodist founders and its long-standing ban on saloons. For students and townspeople, the campus was both an academic institution and a familiar landmark on the lake.
