Sterling, Illinois, sits on the Rock River in Whiteside County, and in 1907 its factories and its twin city across the river, Rock Falls, were the center of local life. The Keystone Works, a manufacturing plant on the Sterling side, was one of the industrial sites that gave the town its reputation as a place of steady mill work and wage earners. Manufacturing drew workers and families from the surrounding farm country, and the rail lines running through the area carried the town's products to markets across the Midwest. Residents in 1907 would have known the place mainly by its factories, its river dam and power, and the busy neighborhoods that grew up near the works.
