Moline, Illinois, in 1907 was a river city on the Mississippi's Iowa-Illinois shore, and its economy rested on manufacturing. Deere & Company, the plow maker that had moved its headquarters there in 1848, was the town's largest employer, and its neighboring wagon and implement works made Moline known across the farm belt. Farm machinery was the common language of the place, and families who worked the mills and foundries lived in streets that climbed from the riverfront toward the bluffs. Moline shared its civic life and rail traffic with the neighboring cities of the Quad Cities, which together handled a steady flow of grain, lumber, and manufactured goods. Residents in 1907 would have known the town first as a center of plow and wagon making, and the view of its works and rooftops captures that industrial identity.
