Waukegan, the Lake County seat on the Lake Michigan shore about 35 miles north of Chicago, is the subject of this 1908 bird's-eye view. By then the city had grown on the strength of its harbor, its lakefront trade, and its rail connections, which tied it to Chicago and to the farm and resort country inland. Lumber, grain, and manufacturing shaped the local economy, and the courthouse, churches, and downtown blocks made the town the center of county government and commerce. Residents of the period knew Waukegan as a lakeside working town with a growing population, a busy harbor, and an increasingly settled city grid spreading from the lake toward the railroad lines. The 1908 view records that mix of commerce, residential streets, and open lake frontage at a moment when the city was expanding steadily.
