Chicago in 1912 was the second-largest city in the United States, with a population of roughly two million, and it ran on the stockyards, the meatpacking plants, the grain elevators, and the rail lines that converged on the city from every direction. Its Loop was crowded with department stores and office towers, and the Chicago River, reversed in 1900 to carry sewage away from Lake Michigan, still shaped where the factories and warehouses stood. Politics was dominated by the Democratic machine under Mayor Carter Harrison Jr., and the city was preparing for the Burnham plan's ambitions for lakefront parks and boulevards. Residents also knew the city for its newspapers, its theaters, and the recent rebuilding after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
